Almost Award Winning Mac and Cheese

Ingredients

  • 16 ounces elbow macaroni
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • ¾ cup whipping cream
  • 10 ounces natural cheese – any combination colby-jack, Muenster, Gruyere, shredded (2 ½ cups)
  • 4 ounces Velveeta cheese cubed (1 cup)
  • ½ cup 1 stick butter, cut in pieces
  • 1 egg beaten
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Panko bread crumbs optional

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • In a large pan, cook macaroni according to package directions in boiling salted water until al dente; drain.
  • In a large bowl, combine macaroni, milk, cream, natural cheeses, Velveeta, butter, egg, salt and pepper; mix well.
  • Turn into a 13×9-inch baking pan or dish; cover with aluminum foil.
  • Bake 45 to 60 minutes or until bubbly.
  • For a crunchy topping, after 30 minutes baking, uncover and top with bread crumbs.
  • Bake uncovered 15 minutes longer.
