My oldest called and asked me to come up with peppermint syrup for her hot chocolate! My first instinct was to tell her to just stir her hot chocolate with candy canes, but I was quickly informed that doesn’t make it strong enough!
I decided maybe a simple syrup made with candy canes would be the key. Simple syrups are, well, simple, they are a 1:1 ratio. So I threw some water and an equal amount of crushed candy canes in a pan, said a little prayer and waited.
When she finally got a chance to try it, well she was happy and so was I!
“Christmas In A Cup”
This was her exact quote when she called to tell me it was exactly what she wanted! I was so happy!
Now to be clear this is NOT a Starbucks copy cat recipe, she told me it wasn’t exactly the same but that she loved it!
Super Simple Peppermint Syrup
Bottles of this peppermint syrup would make excellent inexpensive gifts for neighbors, friends, gift exchanges. I had these bottles from my Grandma but I found similar ones on Amazon, but they also have so many other fun options!

Super Simple Peppermint Syrup
Ingredients
- 2/3 cup crushed or broken candy canes about 12 regular size candy canes
- 2/3 cup water
Instructions
- Add water and candy cane pieces to a small saucepan, bring to a low simmer over medium heat
- Allow to simmer till all candy cane pieces are melted and you have peppermint syrup
- Store in an airtight bottle or container.
