Hoosier or not, Sugar Cream Pie is awesome! Seriously, anything that is named with those three words, Sugar and Cream and Pie, what’s not to like!
Butter-YUM, Sugar-YUM, Pie-YUM
I plopped down in the comfy kitchen chair the other day and as tired as I was jumped right back up when the nut driver I just sat on caused me slight discomfort. That’s when I realized my kitchen suffered a severe case of identity crisis…was I even really in my kitchen, I looked around and I wasn’t sure.
About 3 weeks ago I walked in the kitchen to find Chris, my husband, emptying the dishwasher. My heart melted just a little till I caught sight of some parts off the corn planter on the counter. He needed the dishwasher to wash them, at least he hadn’t asked me to empty it first!
Sugar Cream Pie and An Identity Crisis
In an antique crock on my Hoosier Kitchen was miscellaneous sizes of nuts and bolt, a pair of needle nose pliers, several screwdrivers and some small things I honestly didn’t recognize but I know they don’t belong in the kitchen.
There is a bag of calf milk replacer and a bag of sweet corn seed casually leaning against the counter next to the bar stools. The calf bottle sitting on the kitchen window ledge next to the little hand made wooden cross.
The medicine cabinet in the kitchen? Let’s just hope the kids don’t get a fever, all 4 of the thermometers are clearly labeled ‘LIVESTOCK’! On the bright side, they are labeled. Sitting right beside the Tylenol bottle, which I was beginning to need, was a bottle of Lutalyse!
In the refrigerator is a wide assortment of vaccines. Need a syringe to administer, if not on the counter just check under the sink, on the Hoosier Kitchen or next to the phone!
Least we not forget the sheer number of boots scattered on the floor, along with the dirt and other organic substances that come in on them! And the livestock that have lived in my kitchen, oh the livestock that has lived in my kitchen, but I digress-a story for another time!
But maybe my favorite was the calf pulling chains laying next to the box of pie crust dough. Yes, we had pulled a calf that day, yes I had rinsed them and yes I buy pie crust dough.
But we ended up with a beautiful calf and a delicious Sugar Cream Pie –
Life Is Good!
Sugar Cream Pie
- 1/2 cup butter
- 2 1/4 cups milk
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup cornstarch
- Baked Pie Shell
- Heat to almost boiling 1/2 cup butter, 2 cups milk and 1 cup sugar.
- Combine 1/4 cup milk and 1/4 cup cornstarch, stir till combine and smooth.
- Once butter, milk and sugar are almost to a boil SLOWLY drizzle in milk and cornstarch while continually stirring.
- Drizzle and stir. Drizzle and stir.
- Once incorporated continuing cooking and stirring till mixture is not quite as thick as pudding.
- Pour into a baked pie shell.
- Sprinkle with nutmeg.
- Bake 10-12 minutes at 350 degrees.
- Allow pie to cool and set up before serving.
